Secretary of State’s Special Advisor for Science & Technology Visits Dubai and Sharjah

September 27, 2009 – Dr. Nina Fedoroff, the Secretary of State’s Special Advisor for Science & Technology, visited Dubai and Sharjah to discuss research and development initiatives in the Middle East. 

Dr. Fedoroff is a featured speaker at the 1st Conference on Arab Women in Science and Technology – “Empowerment for the Development of the Arab World”.  Dr. Fedoroff’s remarks focused on the food security.

Dr. Fedoroff also visited the American University of Sharjah (AUS), where she and Consul General Justin Siberell met with AUS Chancellor Dr. Peter Heath, to discuss the status of research and development (R&D) in the region, the obstacles preventing development in these fields, and the efforts AUS is exerting to raise the quality and quantity of R&D in the UAE in particular and in the region in general.

Dr. Fedoroff was named the US Department of State’s Science and Technology Adviser by then- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 2007. Dr. Fedoroff is a leading geneticist and molecular biologist. She has served as a staff scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and on the faculties of Johns Hopkins University and now at Pennsylvania State University, where she is the founding director of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences. Dr. Fedoroff is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the European Academy of Sciences. She has served on the National Science Board of the National Science Foundation. Dr. Fedoroff is a 2006 National Medal of Science laureate.
