Statement by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the Occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr Secretary Clinton extends personal greetings to Muslims around the world during Eid September 16, 2009 Washington, D.C. In 1996, my husband and I were privileged to host the first ever White House Eid celebration, which has now become a tradition. And this year, I hosted an Iftar at the State Department, with Muslims and non-Muslims attending. We hope that reinforces every year that all faiths have a home here in the United States. For Muslims all over the world, Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of a holy month of fasting and prayer. This time of self-reflection reminds us that the values of Islam – charity, community, cooperation, compassion – are values which we hold dear as Americans and which have contributed so much to American culture. As President Obama said in Cairo, the United States seeks a new beginning with Muslims around the world, one based on mutual interest and mutual respect. We know there is more that unites peoples of faith than divides us. So as Ramadan draws to a close, let us hold on to that spirit of community throughout the year to achieve our common goals of peace, prosperity, and stability. And I wish all of you a very happy year as well. Thank you. 16 أيلول/سبتمبر 2009 واشنطن العاصمة الوزيرة كلينتون: مرحبا وعيد مبارك. يسعدني أن أحتفل بختام شهر رمضان بأن أتمنى لكم جميعا عيدا سعيدا. في العام 1996 كان لزوجي ولي شرف استضافة أول احتفال أبدا بالعيد في البيت الأبيض والذي أصبح الآن تقليدا متبعا. وقد استضفت هذا العام حفل إفطار في وزارة الخارجية حضره مسلمون وغير مسلمين. ونأمل أن يعزز هذا في كل عام أن لكل الأديان بيتا هنا في الولايات المتحدة. يمثل عيد الفطر للمسلمين في كل أرجاء العالم ختام شهر مبارك من الصيام والتعبد. ويذكّرنا هذا الوقت من التأمل الذاتي بأن قيم الإسلام -- من برّ ومشاركة اجتماعية وتعاون وتراحم وتعاطف – هي القيم التي نعتز بها كأميركيين والتي أسهمت إسهاما كبيرا في الثقافة الأميركية. وكما قال الرئيس أوباما في القاهرة، فإن الولايات المتحدة تسعى إلى بداية جديدة مع المسلمين في أنحاء العالم تكون قائمة على المصلحة المتبادلة والاحترام المتبادل. ونحن نعلم أن هناك ما يوحد أتباع الديانات أكثر مما يفرقنا. وهكذا، وفيما يشارف رمضان على نهايته، دعونا نتمسك بروح الجماعة هذه على مدار السنة كي نحقق أهدافنا المشتركة في السلام والرخاء والاستقرار. وأتمنى لكم جميعا عاما سعيدا جدا أيضا. وشكرا لكم.
