Domestic Employee Visa
Personal or domestic employees who are accompanying an employer in the United States are eligible for B-1 visas. This category of persons includes, but is not limited to, cooks, butlers, chauffeurs, housemaids, nannies, and paid companions.
In addition to the basic documentation required of all visa applicants listed in our General Instructions, a domestic servant applying for a U.S. visa to accompany his/her employer to the United States for a brief visit should:
- Appear for the nonimmigrant visa interview accompanied by his/her employer;
- Present evidence of history of employment as a domestic servant; and
- Provide a contract (please refer to Agreement between Domestic Servant and Sponsor for an example) signed by the domestic servant and the employer stating clearly the salary that the domestic servant will receive while in the United States. Please visit the Department of Labor’s Online Wage Library for details on prevailing wages in the state you will visit.
