Social Security

The Federal Benefits Unit at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece, is responsible for handling Social Security issues, including benefits, issuing Social Security numbers, and replacing lost Social Security cards.

Informational brochures and some application forms are also available at either the Social Security Administration’s website or at the Consulate General’s Consular Section during American Citizen Services hours (Sunday through Thursday, 12:30 PM – 3:00 PM)

The Consulate General’s Consular Section can attest true copies of the documents required for Social Security applications during American Citizen Services hours (Sunday through Thursday, 12:30 PM – 3:00 PM). The most common required supporting documents are:

  • Original birth certificate issued by the authorities of the applicant’s country of birth

  • U.S. Passport or Alien Card of applicant

  • If a parent is applying for their child, they must submit evidence of his or her identity such as the U.S. passport or military i.d. card
