Cultural Envoy Begins Three City Tour offering Master Classes and Exhibits
On March 11, Muslim American artist Nasreen Haroon began a three city tour of her exhibit “Landscapes” at the Sharjah Cultural Palace. The California artist’s work combines inspiration from her Muslim roots with the physical environment and harmony of Southern California, presenting an intriguing palette of vibrant hues with the magnificent play of shadows and light offered by nature.
The exhibit is accompanied by a series of Master Classes funded through the Department of State’s Cultural Envoy program. The Master Classes are offered to High School and College students and to young local artists at the Sharjah Art Institute.
U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Hilary Olsin-Windecker and the Ruler of Sharjah’s Private Consultant Abdulrahman Al Jarwan opened the exhibit on March 11. Also present were General Director of the Sharjah Department of Information and Culture Abdullah Al Owais and Director of the Sharjah Directorate of Arts Hisham Madhloom. Approximately fifty guests and contacts from local cultural institutions and universities attended the opening
Nasreen Haroon’s 24 oil paintings will be on display at the Sharjah Cultural Palace until March 15. Thereafter, the exhibit will move to Dubai to the Miraj Islamic Art Center (March 18 through 22) and to Abu Dhabi’s Women’s College (March 25 through 29). The artist will teach Master classes in each location. Artists interested in signing up for one of the classes, which are offered free of charge, should contact Public Affairs Officer Marion Ram via e-mail at ramm@state.gov.
The exhibits and workshops are organized through the U.S. Consulate General Dubai’s Public Affairs Office and the U.S. Embassy Abu Dhabi’s American Center for Press and Cultural Affairs, in generous cooperation with the Department of State’s Bureau for Cultural and Educational Affairs, the Government of Sharjah’s Department of Culture, Directorate of Arts, the Miraj Islamic Art Center in Dubai and the Higher Colleges of Technology, Abu Dhabi Women’s College.
