HH Sheikh Sultan Greets U.S. Mission Officials at Sharjah International Book Fair

On December 5, Deputy Chief of Mission Martin Quinn, Consul General Paul Sutphin, and Public Affairs Officers Hilary Olsin-Windecker and Marion Ram participated in the opening of the 25th International Book Fair in Sharjah. The Fair, which features the latest titles on the culture, history and heritage of the UAE as well as a wealth of international titles in Arabic, English and other languages, was opened by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah.

The American Center participated in the fair with a booth featuring books in translation, English teaching materials as well as publications on U.S. history, geography, government and education. A new set of 80 Arabic and English children’s books offered by the Scholastic Company is also on display this year; the boxed set was presented as a gift to His Highness by Hilary Olsin-Windecker, who helped create the set.

While visiting the American booth, HH Sheikh Sultan expressed his appreciation for the continuous support provided by the American Center to this important cultural event.

The Sharjah World Book Fair is the most prestigious and widely attended book fair in the Gulf region, organized by the Department of Culture & Information of Sharjah Government since 1981. Participants include publishing houses, cultural institutions, research centers, associations, NGOs, universities, media institutions, and producers of educational aids, maps, and audio-visual materials.
