Fujairah Youth Improve Their Language Skills Through Musical Education
March 15, 2009 – Music is a universal language and is a creative vehicle for teaching language in the classroom. At the American Corner at the Higher College of Technology (HCT) Fujairah Women’s College, 3rd and 4th grade students were joined by Bachelors of Education students for a musical education workshop sponsored by the U.S. Mission.
The workshop featured Johnette Downing, a multi-award winning author and musician. Dubbed the "Musical Ambassador for Children" by clients and fans across the globe, Johnette is dedicated to cultural exchanges with children through her concerts, music, books and poetry, and with educators through her keynotes and educator workshops.
The workshop used songs, rhythms, scarves, games, musical instruments and cooperative learning to help the young students improve their English language skills, and to help the educators discover ways to make language learning interactive and fun.
Hosted by HCT Fujairah Director Mark Johnson, the workshop also featured opening remarks by Consul General Paul Sutphin and Bachelors of Education Program Director Deborah Johnson.
