Consul General Hosts Clinton Scholars and MEPI Leadership Institute Students
On September 30, the Consul General and Mrs. Sutphin hosted a group of Clinton Scholars resident at the American University in Dubai and graduates of this year’s Middle East Partnership Initiative Summer Leadership Program for an informal supper at their home. The Consul General warmly welcomed the students, and briefed them on a number of topics, including the vitality of the region, policy issues, the Foreign Service selection process, and opportunities for involvement with students from the UAE. American students had an opportunity to discuss UAE cultural issues with a local student who participated in this year’s Summer Leadership Institute, which is funded by the Department of State. The MEPI program gives eight UAE national students the opportunity to study at renowned universities in the United States for six weeks in the summer. The Clinton Scholars are funded by the Clinton Presidential Foundation to study and expand their cultural and educational horizons at the American University in Dubai for one semester.
The Clinton Scholars expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to study in Dubai offered to them through this program, which is designed to strengthen the capacity of people in the United State to meet the challenges of global interdependence. Up to 10 U.S. undergraduate students per semester are selected for this program, particularly students who show an interest in being exposed to the Middle East and Islamic culture for the first time.
